Classics always do well, and this is certainly true of the classic garden. This type of garden is characterized by its park-like and stately designs, with clean lines, pruned beds, pebbles, fountains and trees. We are happy to tell you how you can create a classic garden at home.
What is a classic garden?
A classic garden is an outdoor environment that makes one look stately. A type of garden you often see in castle settings as well. This park-like outdoor space is spacious and laid out with clear lines. Lots of greenery and the use of beautiful materials. Striking tiles and seating areas. An uncluttered garden in which you can pleasantly dream away.
Perfect line games and symmetry
The basis for a classic garden is definitely the clean lines that can be seen throughout the garden. The garden becomes, so to speak, an extension of the house, where inside and outside seamlessly connect. Taut walkways, with several flower beds with tightly trimmed hedge plants along the route, recur in this type of garden.
Tight (hedge) plants
The classic garden features rich plantings. Think of hedge plants like the Buxus or Japanese Holly (Ilex Crenata). These are easy to prune (shear) and different flower beds are created with them. In addition, you can also shear them into bulbs. A classical garden thus requires more maintenance than, for example, a nature garden. It would therefore come in handy with this type of garden if you like to work in the garden.
Lots of greenery in the garden
A lawn also fits well into the traditional garden. Grass is often laid around the flower beds, and walkways also run through the lawn and down the flower beds. You can also plant trees in the classic garden. For example, you can plant espalier trees (kind of hedge on trunks), but also a stand-alone eye-catcher does well. For example, a birch, chestnut tree or fruit tree in the middle of your lawn. In terms of flowers, hydrangea, lavender or (climbing) roses are good choices.
Fountain or other water feature
A fountain definitely does well in the classic garden. You can place it free-standing on the walkway (provided you have enough space). You can also create a pond. If you have a large garden, you can, for example, choose a large pond with koi carp. In any case, have the pond constructed in such a way that it is in line with the other sleek lines in the garden.
Seating and accessories
A classic garden does not need much embellishment in terms of accessories, but you can, for example, dress up the garden with baked pots or an eye-catching sculpture. There are plenty of works of art available for the garden, such as garden vases or recreated statues from classical antiquity. An arbor and teahouse also connect well. Go for several comfortable seating areas so you can always view the garden from a different view. Choose beautiful tiles or the traditional white pebbles for laying the walkways.
