A limitless garden in which you can wander around for hours, we probably all dream of that. However, reality is often different, because most Dutch gardens are small and border on both sides to the gardens of the neighbors. Still, there are some ways to make your dream of a large garden come true.
To achieve this you will have to fool yourself a little. With creativity, you can make a small garden look big.

Tip 1. Pretend to make your small garden look big
A small garden is small. Unfortunately, you cannot change the size of your garden, but you can pretend that it is bigger.
By largely hiding parts of your garden from view, you create the illusion that your garden looks larger. Of course, you do give a taste of what can be seen behind it in the garden by means of a vista. This creates the expectation that there is more to see beyond our field of vision. One way to separate your garden is with hedges or trellis. This gives you the opportunity to make your small garden appear large.
Tip 2. Great heights or deep valleys
Elevation also allows you to make your garden appear larger. For example, you can build your patio so that it is higher than the rest of the garden. This does not necessarily have to be a large difference in height; one or two steps is sufficient. Also, like an elevation, a lowering can maintain the illusion of a more spacious garden. This ensures that the garden cannot be captured at a glance. You will have to take a closer look at what can be seen on the elevation or lowering.
Tip 3. Fence horizontally
Most people choose to separate their yard with a fence. In a small yard this is fine, but should you want to make your small yard look large not every type of fence is equally suitable. Horizontal stripes have a very different effect than vertical stripes. The same is true for the direction on your fence. To make your garden appear larger, we recommend choosing a fence where the boards are stacked horizontally. This will accentuate the depth of your garden and make your garden seem longer than it actually is. Moreover, we also recommend that you get the fence in a dark color to make the small garden look bigger.
Tip 4. Review
Are you a total fan of boxwood or do you absolutely adore a particular potted plant and definitely want it to recur in your small garden? By repeating a certain pattern or object several times, you trick the brain into believing that the pattern is repeated beyond sight. In other words, we assume that what you can't see just belongs to your garden, because in all likelihood the pattern repeats there, even though it is so not.
Tip 5. Paving
If you have decided that you would like paving in your garden, it is important that you consider the different sizes and shapes of tiles. Not every tile will fit in every garden, especially if you have a somewhat smaller garden.
To make a small garden look big, it is best to choose large tiles. You can possibly lay them separately from each other, making the path look bigger and thus the garden.
It is also important to think carefully about how you wish to lay the paving. To create the presumption of space, it is not smart to choose the shortest path, but rather a little longer or to let the path meander through your garden. You can also make your path disappear behind a tree, shrub or hedge. This creates the illusion that the path continues out of sight making the small garden seem large.
