Do you always think back with sparkling eyes to that vacation by the Mediterranean? The beautiful countryside of Tuscany, the Spanish and Greek islands or breathtaking Cyprus? Although the gardens in these areas each have their own look, we do see some similar features that make many people dream away at these landscapes. Meet the Mediterranean garden!

Mediterranean garden

Mediterranean garden plants

The garden with Southern European atmosphere is characterized by lush planting, with exotic plants and flowers in exotic colors. Tree fern, agave, fan palm, yucca and cypress are good plants in a Mediterranean garden. In addition, enrich with eye-catchers such as passion flowers, lavender and African lilies. Alternate in ground plants with plants in pots. Mediterranean gardens are not overly rigid. Choose playful shapes and vary border plantings, walkways and seating areas.

Reap the benefits of (in) your garden

In addition, what really should not be missed are olive trees and grape vines. These do well in the Dutch climate. A fig tree, orange tree, it looks beautiful in the Mediterranean garden. However, not every plant will grow equally well in the Dutch climate, which is why, for example, you have to put a Citrus tree inside in the winter. Therefore, you can also choose to focus on fruit trees that are more resistant to frost, such as pear, apple and cherry trees.

Paving Mediterranean garden

What about walkways? Basically, a few types of paving fit this exotic garden very well. First, those are playful pebble paths. Beautiful, but not practical for everyone. Another choice are flagstones in cream color. Here each stone differs in size, which creates a special effect. You can also choose terracotta tiles for your seating area. These brown tiles are perfect for a Mediterranean garden!

Mediterranean patio garden

Create a kind of courtyard where you can relax. For example, surround this patio with vines and provide comfortable seating areas. Lounge sets with lots of wood do well in the Mediterranean garden. You can also see this type of lounge set becoming increasingly popular in garden furniture stores recently, so there is plenty of choice. For example, finish it off with a hanging chair such as a seat egg. A hammock and ottoman also fit perfectly.

Mediterranean garden accessories

Flower pots made of terracotta, accessories with atmospheric prints and designs, choose warm colors that emphasize the Mediterranean feeling. Think pastel colors, including cream, mint green, light blue and soft pink. Finish the seating area with a beautiful, round mirror and a patterned outdoor rug. Provide lanterns with ornate finishes. Purchase beautifully decorated tapas dishes and host your dinner party in your own garden.
