Layout of the Garden
The garden was designed as a cohesive landscape in which functionality and experience go hand in hand. From the driveway, a logical path unfolds past various gathering spots, with the terraces connected to one another in a natural way. A key design principle is the combination of gravel and stepping stones. The gravel creates a warm, rustic, and timeless look that blends perfectly with the Veluwe surroundings. The stepping stones add an architectural layer by introducing rhythm, direction, and structure to the design. They intuitively guide visitors through the garden and enhance the sightlines between the house, the flower beds, and the swimming pond. These psychological walking paths make the garden easy to navigate and inviting without the need for rigid or formal paths. The result is a relaxed garden experience in which tranquility, elegance, and functionality reinforce one another.
The Planting
The plantings serve as the unifying element in the garden design and ensure that the home blends seamlessly into the landscape. Large swaths of ornamental grasses such as Pennisetum orientale ‘Karley Rose’ and Sesleria autumnalis create a sense of tranquility, movement, and a natural foundation. Amidst them, perennials such as Echinacea pallida, Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Fire Dance’, Veronicastrum, Sanguisorba, and Sedum ‘Matrona’ bloom, adding ever-changing accents throughout the season. The airy blue of Calamintha nepeta subtly contrasts with the warm carmine-red hues of Origanum ‘Rosenkuppel’, creating a harmonious and refined color palette. Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’, Salvia nemorosa, and Achillea ‘Terracotta’ enhance the natural character. Evergreen elements such as Taxus and Choisya ‘Sundance’ provide structure and winter interest. Swimming Pond
The swimming pond is one of the most distinctive elements of the design and has been carefully positioned to make the most of the sun, sightlines, and ease of use. On one side is the natural filtration zone with aquatic plants, elegantly blending technology and nature. Between the swimming area and the purification zone runs a series of stepping stones that are not only functional but also create a striking visual effect. This creates the illusion that one can literally walk across the water. These stepping stones then continue into the surrounding lawn, ensuring that the swimming pond is not perceived as a separate element but is fully integrated into the garden design. The nearby outdoor shower enhances the vacation atmosphere and makes the space practical to use. The result is a natural swimming environment that effortlessly combines tranquility, luxury, and scenic beauty.
Entrance Gate
The entrance gate serves as the garden’s calling card and powerfully marks the transition between public space and private property. The design combines a modern architectural aesthetic with a warm and inviting atmosphere. A distinctive feature is the vertical bars, which are arranged in a deliberately irregular pattern. This creates a playful and dynamic appearance without the gate losing its tranquil character. Furthermore, the variation in openings creates an interesting interplay of light, shadow, and vistas. The gate has an imposing presence that matches the scale of the home and the quality of the garden, yet at the same time feels refined and accessible. The materials blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, allowing modern design and the softness of the landscape to enhance one another.
