Mediterranean family garden
New lot
In a new neighborhood of detached homes stands this classic townhouse, modern and energy-neutral in design. The plot exudes potential for a Mediterranean garden with an ibiza feel, complete with pool and pool house. Especially here, the space requires a well thought-out layout, so that there are no empty spaces. Important aspects are sun and shade, functional routes (where do we park, how do we move around the house?), sightlines and depth perception. Everything must not only be practical, but also aesthetically pleasing. Because of the many angled corners and roundings in the lot, organic forms were chosen, giving the garden a natural flow and high-quality appearance.
Materials
The positioning of large elements - mature trees, pool, outdoor living area - creates a world of its own in the garden, almost like a small village. At the same time, the garden must match both the classic architecture of the house and the desire for a Mediterranean atmosphere. This provides guidance in the choice of materials: soft tones in the paving, combined with warm wood accents and flowing contours, ensure a harmonious transition from house to garden. Finishing the pool house with white stucco creates an Ibiza garden. Asymmetrically extending the wood choice of the outdoor living area into the yard boundary up to the house creates a connection between two different architectural styles.
Mediterranean planting
Mediterranean plants can also thrive in the Dutch climate. However, soil conditions require attention. In this North Holland garden, the subsoil consisted of clay, over it construction sand (typical of new neighborhoods), with only a thin layer of black soil. Although that black soil is rich enough, the overall composition was not favorable: the soil was too compacted by construction work, so roots did not get enough air. With the right techniques, such as deep digging and improving the structure, a fertile base was still created. This allows the Mediterranean plants to develop optimally, creating a garden that breathes atmosphere and character all year round.
Lighting plan
Outdoor lighting makes a garden a full part of the living space at night. It increases visibility and safety, but most of all creates atmosphere and experience. Where without lighting you only look into a dark space, with light you create depth and connection between inside and outside. Illuminating a solitary tree with multiple trunks, for example, gives extra character and an almost fairy-tale atmosphere. Lighting also gives the house itself a new dimension: the architecture only really becomes visible at night.
A good lighting plan goes beyond placement choices. It calls for future-proof infrastructure, such as electrical points and sheath pipes. This keeps the garden flexible and makes it easy to add additional lighting later, even after construction is fully complete.
