Bringing it all together
Surrounding the historic Czaar Peterhuisje in Zaandam, one guiding principle was central: to create a park-like environment that does justice to the museum’s monumental character while also functioning effectively as a public space. The existing sculptures have been given a prominent place within the design, while the walking paths naturally guide visitors through the garden. The museum’s classical character formed the basis for a clear and largely symmetrical layout, in which sightlines and spatial balance have been carefully crafted.
Although the design consists of straight lines, sharp angles, and a strong geometric structure, the garden never feels austere or formal. This is remarkable, given that the plot itself has a sloping and less conventional shape. By carefully positioning the contours and precisely balancing the proportions between paths, borders, and seating areas, the result is a design that exudes tranquility while feeling natural. It is precisely this balance between architecture and landscape that makes this park garden so special.
Planting
The plantings harmonize with the historic surroundings while also possessing a contemporary character. This planting plan is based on a strong, carefully considered structure, progressing from a green base to blooms in early spring, spring, summer, and fall.
At first glance, the garden appears classic, while the borders evolve throughout the year into a rich and natural whole. Influences from cottage, woodland, and Mediterranean planting styles create a relaxed atmosphere, supported by a strong green foundation of perennials, shrubs, and ornamental grasses.
Starting in February, snowdrops (Galanthus) and crocuses (Crocus) bring the first splash of color, followed by Epimedium, Astrantia, and Bergenia in the spring. In the summer, lavender (Lavandula), salvia (Salvia), roses (Rosa), and hydrangeas (Hydrangea), while anemones, persicaria, liriope, abelia, and miscanthus provide an attractive late-summer and fall display.
In addition to a long blooming period, the plantings contribute to biodiversity and a rich seasonal experience. Nectar- and pollen-rich species attract bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, while evergreen plants, ornamental grasses, and seed heads continue to provide structure and character to the garden even in winter.
